Description

What is BODY COMPOSITION? Body composition refers to the different types of tissues that build up your body and its main components - e.g. free fat mass, fat mass, and water. Understanding your body composition can help you set goals for improving your overall health and fitness and it will give you an insight of how your body is made, rather than just focusing on the number on the scale. BODY COMPOSITION TEST - How does it work? You will be required to lie down on a mat and to uncover your dominant side ankle and wrist. Some electrodes will be applied to your skin and a device called a bioimpedance analyzer will be used to send a low-level electrical current through the body. NO WORRIES! It’s completely safe! :) Measuring the resistance encountered by the current - different tissues in the body such as muscle, fat, bone, and water, conduct electricity differently - allows the analyzer to estimate the proportions of these tissues in the body. Bioimpedance analyzers are commonly used in healthcare settings, and fitness centres to assess body composition, monitor changes in muscle mass, fat mass, and hydration levels, and evaluate overall health and fitness levels. Where? The test will be performed in the Fitness Studio, or any other area available that day. Please, refer to the Welcome Desk/Reception as the location may vary. WHY me? My name is Emanuela and in 2021 I completed my studies in Food Science and Nutrition at a MSc level. Since then I’ve dedicated my time to improving my knowledge and expertise in the Body Composition Field, by attending seminars and conferences both online and in presence. I want to mention my participation in the annual Body Composition Conference held in Rome in 2023. I’ve conducted my studies in Italy and now I’m currently working towards my registration for the AfN Register (Association for Nutritionists in the UK). Prerequisites: - You will be asked to provide an accurate height and weight and not to perform any physical activities 24 hours before the test. - Avoid eating and drinking coffee and alcohol for at least 3 hours before the test. - You will be asked to remove your jewellery and any metal accessories that may interfere with the running of the test. - No recent tattoos as they may compromise the result of the fluids compartments. - Do not apply any cream/balms or perfumes in the area used for the test (hands/wrist/lower arm and feet/ankle/lower leg)
